A brief look at a few highlights from the First Annual APA Raw National Powerlifting & Benchpress Championships.
As advertised there were NO walk-ins allowed the morning of the meet! We had 46 lifters, and could have had many more if we allowed walk-ins!
All the flights were set up on Friday night, and posted at 6:30 am Saturday morning. Then all we had to do, was sit and wait for the first lifters to start coming is at 7:40 am!
The rules briefing was given promptly at 8:30 am, and the first lifter was called to the platform at 9:00 am sharp. By 9:01 the second attempt squat was being loaded! At 11:30, Pizza’s were delivered, Gator aid, and bottled water were available to the lifters all day! All the lifters had plenty to eat and drink while lifting!
The final trophy was awarded at 3:15 pm!!!
A few Highlights were:
Joe Morrows 10 TBW Total 1427 at a mere 142 lbs!!! Joe also won mens full power, and men’s bench only Best Lifter Awards! The scary thing is, Joe had more in him!
Vikki Traugot hit her first Elite Total. Totaling 854 at 154, earning her her First womens
Best Lifter Award…. Congrats to Vikki!!!
JoJo Brasseaux winning the womens Best Lifter for bench only with a 270 bench at 155!
A real battle took place in the mens Open 220 class. With 7 lifters, and only 30 kilos separating 1st from 3rd. The winner wasn’t decided until the last pull. Jody Steen won with a 1637 total, 2nd went to Jeff Ray with a 1604 total, and Jeff’s BMF Team mate Eric Whitfield took 3rd with a 1571 total! Eric left some on the platform, but had a blast competing with some very good, and friendly competitors!
Andy Bowen, another BMF Team member totaled 1604 at 192 lbs. For 1st in the 198 class!
Guest lifter Richardn Hawthorn. Richard was only there with his teen lifters, and was not training for a meet! I talked Richard into pulling for the crowd. Richard weighted in at a ripped 126 lbs. And Opened with a 4 TBW 507 pull. Easy! Went on to 551 lb second, just as easy, then on to a near miss at 272.5 kilos, 600 lbs at 126…..RAW!!! Richard is truly the best out there pound for pound!!!
Another real battle took place in the teen lightweight. Coming out of a 6-competitor field was Hunter Ladner with a huge 1130 total weighing just 147 and 15 years old!!!
I also want to mention Nate Davis. Nate was 4th in the light teens with a 1355 total at 192. He had the largest total in the division, but lost on co-efficiency….Great total Nate!!!
Neil Dreisig was edged out for Best Lifter, but had a near triple BW bench with 336 at 150lbs!!!
The Team Award went to Shawn “Bud” Lyte, and his BMF Sports Team! Congrats to BMF Sports, and all their lifters!
